Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana

Tuesday, September 2: These are my pix of Gary, Indiana -I am fascinated by Gary. It is a place with the remains of such substance. It was a model city - developed by United States Steel to feed its Steel Industry. Developed at the turn of the 20th century within less than a century it disolved. The ruins of Gary are substantial the United Methodist Church stands in the middle of the city as a reminder that even God will leave home under some circumstances. The decadent ruins shout out to all who pass by that life is not fair.Gary is the only place I have ever seen an abandoned United States Post Office - the Eagle still flies.Gary is magnificent in its ruination. Many people came to Gary to seek a better life. They came for work and a chance. They found it for a short time and then it was taken away. It is easy to blame the policies of the Steel Mills - and in a way they are to blame. It was never that they did not make money - it was that they didn't make enough money. They "let their people go". Many left Gary - but not all could go.People in Gary, whose families have been there are nice. They are polite, kinds, well spoken - they have a legacy - but like the city so much of that legacy crumples because legacies cannot be controlled.Ah well - I just felt like writing about Gary tonight. I like photographing there. I like the people and I like the crumbling buildings. They have their own beauty.
